Chapter 14

‘I’ll be back later,’ Kerri said, kissing Norman on the lips before following Douglas out of the pub into the street. They walked to the spot where he had parked the SLK. ‘How much have you had to drink?’ she said as they reached the car.

‘Just as well the new limit isn’t in force yet,’ he replied and unlocked the car. The drive took barely fifteen minutes and he parked round the corner from Colin and Julie’s observation point.

‘What have you got?’ Kerri said as they climbed into the back of the pool car – a battered old Vauxhall Vectra.

‘We think he’s in number fourteen along the street,’ Colin replied. ‘The Land Registry has it in his mother’s name, but she’s been in Australia for years and there’s somebody in there…and it’s not listed as a rented property in the Landlord Registry.’

‘Doesn’t mean it’s him,’ Douglas said. ‘And we’re not going anywhere near the house until we have some evidence that it is him.’

‘The utilities are paid by a man called Wilson Canavan and have been for the past ten years.’

‘Are you saying this Canavan is a false identity for Cavanough?’

Colin shrugged. ‘I suppose so.’

‘We need something harder than suspicion before the boss can get a search warrant. We will have to go charging in as Cavanough could be armed and dangerous…and it could be just some innocent guy called Canavan.’

‘What do you suggest,’ Colin interjected.

‘Find some harder evidence; mount an observation of the property. But that can keep until the morning as this car isn’t ideal.’

‘And if it is Cavanough, he could slip away,’ Julie said.

‘But we don’t have any actual evidence that he’s in the house. We need to get a positive sighting of him and given the risks that needs careful setting up. I’ll phone the boss and put her in the picture,’ Douglas said and reached into his pocket for his phone.

‘Dougie, it’s late.’

‘Colin and Julie have a possible location for Cavanough.’

‘Great, but don’t you go charging in, we need to leave that to the ninja’s with guns.’

‘I want an observation of the property to verify his presence.’

‘That sounds very responsible of you. I’ll get it authorised in the morning and don’t think you’re getting any overtime for this.’

‘I’ll tell them to go home.’

‘Yes, you do that, goodnight.’’

Douglas pocketed the phone. ‘The boss agrees we wait until tomorrow to mount an observation.’

‘All right,’ Colin replied.

Douglas opened the door and bid them: ‘Good night.’

Kerri followed him and as he unlocked the SLK she said: ‘Are you sure they’re going home?’

He climbed into the driver’s side and waited until she had closed the passenger door before replying: ‘I couldn’t have made it plainer.’

Douglas dropped Kerri next to her motorcycle and waited until she had given him a wave of her hand as she sped off before he headed in the direction of home. He quietly parked the car and took the lift to the top floor. A dark and silent flat greeted him and he removed his shoes after quietly pressing the front door closed and locking it.
