Chapter 14
âIâll be back later,â Kerri said, kissing Norman on the lips before following Douglas out of the pub into the street. They walked to the spot where he had parked the SLK. âHow much have you had to drink?â she said as they reached the car.
âJust as well the new limit isnât in force yet,â he replied and unlocked the car. The drive took barely fifteen minutes and he parked round the corner from Colin and Julieâs observation point.
âWhat have you got?â Kerri said as they climbed into the back of the pool car â a battered old Vauxhall Vectra.
âWe think heâs in number fourteen along the street,â Colin replied. âThe Land Registry has it in his motherâs name, but sheâs been in Australia for years and thereâs somebody in thereâ¦and itâs not listed as a rented property in the Landlord Registry.â
âDoesnât mean itâs him,â Douglas said. âAnd weâre not going anywhere near the house until we have some evidence that it is him.â
âThe utilities are paid by a man called Wilson Canavan and have been for the past ten years.â
âAre you saying this Canavan is a false identity for Cavanough?â
Colin shrugged. âI suppose so.â
âWe need something harder than suspicion before the boss can get a search warrant. We will have to go charging in as Cavanough could be armed and dangerousâ¦and it could be just some innocent guy called Canavan.â
âWhat do you suggest,â Colin interjected.
âFind some harder evidence; mount an observation of the property. But that can keep until the morning as this car isnât ideal.â
âAnd if it is Cavanough, he could slip away,â Julie said.
âBut we donât have any actual evidence that heâs in the house. We need to get a positive sighting of him and given the risks that needs careful setting up. Iâll phone the boss and put her in the picture,â Douglas said and reached into his pocket for his phone.
âDougie, itâs late.â
âColin and Julie have a possible location for Cavanough.â
âGreat, but donât you go charging in, we need to leave that to the ninjaâs with guns.â
âI want an observation of the property to verify his presence.â
âThat sounds very responsible of you. Iâll get it authorised in the morning and donât think youâre getting any overtime for this.â
âIâll tell them to go home.â
âYes, you do that, goodnight.ââ
Douglas pocketed the phone. âThe boss agrees we wait until tomorrow to mount an observation.â
âAll right,â Colin replied.
Douglas opened the door and bid them: âGood night.â
Kerri followed him and as he unlocked the SLK she said: âAre you sure theyâre going home?â
He climbed into the driverâs side and waited until she had closed the passenger door before replying: âI couldnât have made it plainer.â
Douglas dropped Kerri next to her motorcycle and waited until she had given him a wave of her hand as she sped off before he headed in the direction of home. He quietly parked the car and took the lift to the top floor. A dark and silent flat greeted him and he removed his shoes after quietly pressing the front door closed and locking it.
